In wildlife photography the background can make or break you. So always check your background. While shooting Sandhill Cranes in NE your background really matters.
Unfortunately there are a lot of really crummy things that can get in your background - irrigation pipes - telephone wires - roads...but there are some cool backgrounds that you run into occasionally - usually there are no cranes in front of them...but ever so often the stars line up.
There are some really cool old farm houses on my routes . Most of them look like they are ready for a major twister to come and take them off their foundation. I do like this background.
